SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (January 15, 2018) – DocuTAP, the leader in technology solutions for on-demand healthcare practices, recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to five college students on a mission to shape the future of healthcare technology.
Our 2017 scholarship winners are:
Veronica Richardson – Stephens College, Columbia, MO
Elizabeth Yoder – Augustana University, Sioux Falls, SD
James McNutt – Kent State University, Kent, OH
Michael Langan – Southern New Hampshire University, Manchester, NH
Chaska McGowan – Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH
What will healthcare look like in the future? If the essays we received are any indication, pretty exciting. For the 2017 competition, students were asked to write an essay about the ways technology could disrupt healthcare as we know it. We were looking for originality, unconventional points of view, and future-focus. And the writers delivered.
We were impressed by the creative thinking behind all of this year’s essays. The winning essays rose to the top because they pushed at the boundaries, drawing us into a bright future where technologies for improving human life and health are built into products we use every day. They also asked us to think about the benefits and costs of advances in health technologies—what’s next and how far is too far?
One common thread ran through many of the essays submitted. Overall, students believe that technology will have a positive impact on healthcare in the future, with personal devices that assess and help improve individual and collective health, with affordable 3-D printing to replace organs for those on wait lists, and with software to automate charting and billing.
One of our top essayists, Michael Langan wrote, “In the coming years we could witness a renaissance in medicine that will make modern medicine seem as crude and antiquated as we now view medicine from the Medieval Era. In addition to being exponentially more advanced, medicine will become accessible and affordable to even the poorest most remote cultures around the globe.”
“Imagine a world with greater self-monitoring through technology. People would be able to live healthier and fuller lives,” said James McNutt, one of our winners.
At DocuTAP, we’re committed to improving the future of healthcare through technology, but we also know that changing the future for good starts with ideas from tomorrow’s leaders. And based on this year’s submissions, the future of healthcare looks bright indeed.
To enter in the essay contest, students were required to write 500 to 800 words describing how technology could disrupt the future of healthcare. Eligible participants had to be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in the U.S. and in good academic standing.
“We were excited by the ideas presented in this year’s essays,” said Dusty Schroeder, Vice President of Marketing at DocuTAP. “This program was created to encourage young people not only to think big and explore possibilities, but to imagine ways to make the world a better place.”
