March 10-16 is Patient Safety Awareness Week, led by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. This week serves as an opportunity for both patients and healthcare professionals to think about patient safety in the healthcare system.
We want to help equip you with ways to bring awareness and help prevent injuries through the prevention of provider burnout. Recent studies have found that physicians who experience burnout are twice as likely to make errors, which puts patients at risk of harm. In fact, 5% of all doctors who admit to experiencing symptoms of burnout say that they have made a mistake that has led to the injury of a patient.
So, what can you do to make sure patients are getting the care they need and providers are feeling refreshed and not bogged down? Here are two ways to help fight provider burnout.
One way to combat provider burnout is to emphasize and be an advocate for work/life balance. Even though the doctor-shortage in American healthcare has put additional pressure on providers, placing importance on personal life can lessen stressors at work.
Some healthcare systems have started to look at how to improve life outside of the workplace, such as having home-repair services or laundry services. These services are intended to help mitigate the stress of personal life so that providers focus more on quality time with friends and family.
2. Help your providers be EMR savvy
Without knowing it, your EMR may be contributing to physicians feeling overworked and emotionally drained. Providers tend to spend more and more time in the software itself, and if providers are navigating the software without appropriate training, then it can lead to additional frustrations.
Making sure that providers have proper training when they are on-boarded and have access to educational materials can make a huge difference in a providers day. Instead of wasting time searching for information or patient data, they will know where to look and find everything they need.
