Chicago, April 29 ” The Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA) announced today at its 2015 Spring Convention that DocuTAP ” an EMR/EHR software, practice management systems and revenue cycle service company based in Sioux Falls, S.D. ” has won the first UCAOA Humanitarian Award for the staff’s dedicated philanthropy work. The award was presented at today’s member breakfast ” a highlight of the annual meeting.
The Humanitarian Award recognizes substantial volunteer contributions by an individual, organization or exhibitor that is medically-related and has a positive impact on a national or international cause.
“The DocuTAP team has participated in incredible international charitable efforts over the past year to truly make the world a better, healthier place in areas that need it most. The company is a stellar representation of our industry,” said P. Joanne Ray, chief executive officer of UCAOA. “We are honored to award DocuTAP with our first annual Humanitarian Award.”
In early January, four DocuTAP employees, along with a Louisiana urgent care physician, Dr. Kevin DiBenedetto, traveled to Haiti to figure out how DocuTAP could help the medical community there. The group experienced devastating conditions in the hospitals and clinics: flies swarmed open wounds, filth was everywhere and heartache was abundant. The medical staff was using rusty medical instruments and unsterile needles, and many of the patients were being cared for by family members. Some of the children in the hospital had been abandoned because of their special needs. Immediately upon returning to the United States, DocuTAP committed to help open an urgent care center and an orphanage for special needs children in Tri Riviere, Haiti.
“After what we experienced in Haiti, we knew that we needed to do something. It was and is our mission to help improve the medical community and health care in Haiti,” said DocuTAP chief executive officer Eric McDonald. “We are honored to win this award, and we thank all of our clients who have and will continue to work tirelessly to help us accomplish our goals in Haiti.”
So far, with the help of its clients, DocuTAP has raised $100,000 to build an orphanage and $50,000 to start the urgent care clinic in Haiti. DocuTAP’s team plans to travel back to Haiti each year with their clients to help teach the Haitian medical staff proper techniques and procedures.
“There is much work to be done, and thanks to our many partners and clients, our goal is to double our initial investment in Haiti by the end of 2015,” said McDonald. “By providing funds, shelter, clean medical space, and expert teachers, we hope to improve the health of the many people in need.”
