If you’re not an urgent care provider, you simply can’t understand what it takes to provide episodic care every single day. And no, we’re not talking sitcoms – although there are definitely times our lives feel like an episode of Seinfeld.
From the infamous “oh by the way” to the magic of free food at work, here are 9 things only urgent care providers will understand:
– The patient who says, “Oh by the way; just one more thing,” is about to tell you about a problem much more serious than the original chief complaint.
– Free food always tastes better at work.

– Patients have this bizarre belief that urgent care waiting rooms warp time to make it feel slower than any other place.
– That general medicine practice EMR that administrators chose is the biggest bottleneck to patient flow.
– Patients who insisted on a “stronger” antibiotic never realize that it was their own insistence that caused their pseudomembranous colitis.

– If the urgent care doctor diagnosed “upper respiratory infection,” and two days later the patient’s primary care doctor diagnoses “sinusitis,” the patient is sure the urgent care provider made a terrible mistake and wants their money back.
– No condition diagnosed in an urgent care is ever allowed to turn into something worse. If it does, the patient is sure the urgent care provider definitely made a mistake.
– The patient who is upset that you said it would take “three days” to recover would have been perfectly happy to find out that they would be better in only “72 hours.”
– Patients in the South prefer injectable antibiotics and injectable steroids. Yankees prefer oral medications.
