Tighter Rules for DOT Physicals, Illinois Legislation Approves ‘Urgent Care’ Term

Two recent government decisions are affecting the urgent care industry, concerning DOT physicals, those required by the Department of Transportation, and usage of the term “urgent care” in the state of Illinois.
First, urgent care centers that offer DOT physicals for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers must be on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. Medical examiners must complete the necessary certification from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to perform DOT physicals and provide the proper certificates to CMV drivers.
Also, Illinois legislature passed an amendment to approve usage of the term “urgent care” by centers currently using terms such as “immediate care” and “convenient care”. The Emergency Medical Treatment Act previously prohibited the use of “urgent care” by facilities other than licensed hospitals or freestanding emergency departments.For more on both of these recent developments, view the latest issue of Urgent Care News.
