Practice Velocity is a proud supporter of the 2017 Southwest Urgent Care Conference, to be held May 24-25 at the Westin Galleria in Houston, Texas. This two day conference offers personalized expertise for urgent care professionals including CME credits sponsored by Memorial Hermann Health System.
Dr. David Stern, Founder and CEO of Practice Velocity, will be speaking on the major trends driving the urgent care business. His presentation provides context and perspective for urgent care owners and operators on critical issues affecting profitability and growth including reimbursement, regulation, and consolidation…among others. The information from this session will prove central to developing your center’s annual and long-term strategic plans. For those contemplating or learning more about urgent care, this session provides a “state of the industry” orientation and context for the other presentations.
Additionally, Dr. Stern and Kelly Mattingly, PV’s Director of Contracting and Credentialing, will be presenting on “Navigating the Complexities of Contracting and Credentialing for Urgent Care.” In this presentation, Stern and Mattingly describe how contracting and credentialing can no longer be viewed as a formality in getting paid. Rather, contracting and credentialing are part of an overall business strategy of maximizing available revenue for a center. In addition to sharing overall payer trends, Stern and Mattingly will provide actionable advice for evaluating fee schedules, weighing the pros and cons of participation in various emerging plans, and illustrate checklists needed to assure all bases are covered.
Alan Ayers, PV’s Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, will be presenting on “Differentiation: Achieving Long-term Success in Crowded Markets.” As urgent care centers face increased competition from walk-in primary care, freestanding emergency centers, retail host clinics, and telemedicine, urgent care centers will have to provide a better patient experience than other options. Following the example of major retailers who have differentiated their product and service offerings to survive and thrive in hyper-competitive consumer markets, urgent care centers wanting to cultivate long-term patient loyalty need to define their unique value proposition to consumers.
Additionally, Ayers will be speaking on “The One Metric for Cultivating Patient Loyalty and Spurring Word-of-Mouth.” In order to bring about change and meet patient expectations better than competitors, a feedback and measurement system is needed. Ayers will explain how the “ultimate question” enables Net Promoter Score, a measure that urgent care operators can use to assess and improve their center’s performance. Ayers has over 12 years’ experience in urgent care operations, site development, business strategy and mergers/acquisitions. In addition to serving UCAOA for nine years as a board adviser and director, as Practice Management Editor of The Journal of Urgent Care Medicine he has contributed nearly 450 original articles and presentations on the subject of urgent care, is frequently cited as an expert by the national media, and is a sought-after consultant to hospitals and health systems.
Bonnie Peterson, RN, Vice President of Consulting, will be speaking on urgent care start-ups and integrating occupational medicine. Bonnie will provide valuable insights to site selection and build-out, contracting and credentialing, marketing and operations to assure your new urgent care venture will be a success. She will also speak about how workers compensation injury care, pre-employment and compliance physicals, and substance abuse testing can bring additional revenue, flatten seasonality and ebb-and-flow, and extend relationships with employers and payers. Bonnie has spent the majority of her nursing experience in urgent care and occupational health. She currently holds instructor certification for evidential breath testing, and urine drug screens. She is certified to complete pulmonary function testing and occupational audiology testing. Urgent Care Consultants, affiliated with Practice Velocity, has been involved with over 200 start-up urgent care centers with a 99% success rate.
About the Conference:
In response to the dramatic growth of the urgent care industry and the limited availability of learning opportunities, the Southwest Urgent Care Conference was created to bring national urgent care expertise to the Southwest region and engage providers and leaders to improve clinical quality, access and patient satisfaction. Attendees will acquire valuable, focused insight about how to make practices run more efficiently and profitably for long-term viability and growth.
The two-day conference will feature two valuable education tracks, Clinical and Leadership, presented by administrators and physicians from some of the nation’s leading organizations including Memorial Hermann Medical Group, Texas Children’s Hospital, Synergy Radiology Associates, among many others.
Clinical Track: Providers, MDs, DOs, PAs and NPs currently working in urgent care or interested in urgent care but currently working in another specialty, and pediatrics, internal medicine, emergency medicine and family physicians should attend this track. Presentation topics include:
Upon completion of the clinical track, participants should be able to more effectively evaluate and treat specific urgent care diagnoses for better patient outcomes, plan and implement changes to improve urgent care patient satisfaction and develop strategies for improving urgent care access.
Leadership Track: Urgent care owners, operators, and administrative staff should attend this track. Presentation topics include:
The leadership track will provide valuable insights on building a differentiated urgent care operating model that spurs repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth by serving patients quickly and courteously, utilizing technology to drive throughput and communication, integrating with health systems and community providers, and by optimizing revenue cycle management processes.
