2018 DocuTAP Scholarship Winners Announced

Instant access to medical services and the delivery of healthcare via technology were two of the primary topics students explored in this year’s scholarship program. We asked entrants to tell us in 800 words or less how society’s drive for everything “on-demand” is changing healthcare, and through personal experience or a great deal of imagination, they answered.

Congratulations Ellie Holmes (Augustana University – Sioux Falls, SD) and Lisa Nolasco (University of Arizona – Yuma AZ), the winners of our 2018 scholarship essay program. Each winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support their education and help them reach their goals.

Lisa Nolasco is a military veteran studying information technology at the University of Arizona. According to Lisa, who has personally used telehealth services, this new delivery model can assist veterans in rural areas access the services they need, cut travel costs, and reduce wait times. Technology gives people more access to resources than ever before, she said.

Lisa has three children and is the first in her immediate family to go to college. She was surprised and excited to receive the DocuTAP scholarship. She has her sights set on working for the Department of Homeland Security after she finishes her education.

Our second winner, Ellie Holmes, is a freshman at Augustana University studying biology and Spanish. She is excited and thankful to DocuTAP for helping her reach her future goals.

In her winning essay, Ellie wrote, “People are no longer satisfied with simply waiting and being patient; they now expect their healthcare to be efficient, budget-friendly, and prompt. These new expectations have caused healthcare to find new, innovative ways to better serve their patients.”

We agree, Ellie.

After finishing her undergrad work at Augustana, Ellie wants to attend medical school and become an OB-GYN. She’s grateful to DocuTAP for “giving back to the next generation of employees.”

This year’s essays painted a clear picture of today’s college students, who have grown up in a world where information and services are not only easy to access, but provide big convenience through technology. And although they’re the beneficiaries of the good things medical technology provides, they know innovation is still necessary if we want to be sure healthcare is available and affordable to everyone who needs it.
